There have been various opportunities personal, professional, and academically in which I’ve had the privilege of sharing thoughts and teaching adults. Here are a few examples of them which don’t necessarily incorporate all of my thoughts on Adult Educational Techniques but were adapted to the audience/environment.
Professional – New Product Introduction video to internal Sales & possible customers. While still adhering to corporate standards regarding length & look; I was able to incorporate a way to, again and again, highlight the problems that individuals might be
having in the field and then propose a product solution to that problem. In this way, it was hoped that this video would incorporate Knowles’ principles of:
– Depends on needs
– Problem centered focus
– Need to know why
Personal – This is the secondary need/use for AET within my life. I often interact with adults through Spiritual sermons in which Christian Apologetic topics were discussed, analyzed, and presented. I want to incorporate more of an early synagogue type lesson in which a scripture was read and then discussed amongst the group (typically smaller number of people); the problem is overcoming the modern style of just ‘one-sided’ discussion (typically a larger number of people). I’ve included these videos to be more of a ‘Before’ style of teaching (in hopes of adding future ones with more AET incorporated):
Academically – Through the use of the Powtoon website/software to present ideas using music, speech, & catchy visuals to explain potentially ‘dry’ topics; these videos really challenged me to ‘think outside of the box’ and try to find ‘fun’ ways to pass on tons of information. Knowing that some adults learn through the modalities of audio & video, the hope was to combine the two to provide the information and include humor to peak the interest of the students to not only have a supplantive learning experience – but also provide for them the tools to gain more information (as part of their generative learning).
